<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
"In most questions, only a few marks can be given for theoretical answers. The bulk of the allocated marks are for the interpretation of the information provided in the scenario in the context of some theoretical framework." - ACCA P3 Examiner's Report - December 2015

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"Candidates should also recognise that such questions require the application of knowledge, not the regurgitation of knowledge. Reducing the number of swim lanes (actors) involved in the process is indeed a legitimate approach to process redesign. However, this has to be presented within the context of the scenario; for example; ‘removing the administrators from the process reduces the number of actors involved in the process and this will lead to the following benefits…’ " - ACCA P3 Examiner's Report - December 2015

"Four professional marks were available for answers that were clear, had an appropriate tone and vocabulary and adopted a professional approach." - ACCA P3 Examiner's Report - December 2015
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
"Part (b) of the question required knowledge of a customer relationship management system (CRM). Whilst many candidates were able to answer this question theoretically, a number of candidates failed to obtain the marks available for application to the scenario provided. Candidates need to ensure that they understand the meaning of ‘extension’ in a CRM context." - ACCA P3 Examiner's Report - September 2015

Remember, it is absolutely vital that you demonstrate to the examiner that you have linked the scenario into your answer. Don't simply write down everything you know about the subject. It is far more important to refer only to the relevant theory and state specifically how it relates to the scenario.

The best way to get into the habit of doing this correctly is through practise. You should aim to complete at least 3 full past exam papers under examination conditions before your final exam in order to ensure you make these links effectively.

Don’t forget, the examiners also expect candidates to have a wider knowledge and understanding of the business and accounting world. Accounting is a profession that requires more than just book learning – business acumen is needed too.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stress can be<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> yo<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">u<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">r biggest enemy when it comes to your ACCA exams! In my fifteen years of teaching<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">, I've seen e<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">xce<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">llent students fail their exams due to an inability to mana<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ge their stress leve<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ls! This is such a shame as they often work long and hard to ac<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">hieve success.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Remember, <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">everyone gets nervous in the build up to important events. Whether it's starting a new job, attending an interview or making a wedding speech, it's perfectly natural to feel butterflies in your stomach before the big day.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Sportsmen often say that a little stress is a good thing as it actually improves their performance. Similarly many famous actors suffer from stage fright just before giving outstanding performances on the stage.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Like these successful people, the secret is it to control the stress not let the stress control you!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
So, let's think about stress in terms of your ACCA exams. Take a look at these 5 great tips that could be key the to passing:
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. Make a Plan
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
In times of stress, a nice structured plan could really help you relax.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
This could include a plan of what you are going to do in the week leading up to the ACCA exam. It could even be as detailed as what you will do on the day of the ACCA exam itself.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Knowing that you've planned your time could help to re-assure you that when you step into the exam room, you've done everything you possibly could.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
And isn't that all you can ask of yourself?
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
2. Last bits of Revision
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
It could be argued that what you do in the week leading up to the exam will have the most bearing on how you'll do in the ACCA exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Those last few notes you read, or that final mock exam you complete will be the freshest in your memory and could make all the difference.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
So, make sure your last week of revision is really strong. This will help you feel confident and control your stress levels as you go into the exam.
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
3. Save some Energy
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">That being said, you don't want to burn out before you actually reach your ACCA exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You need to find the balance between that last minute revision, and saving enough energy for when you get to the exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
That means plenty of sleep, and no marathon revision sessions the night before! If you're overtired and have had a lack of sleep you are more likely to suffer from stress. This will have a negative affect on your performance despite all the hours you've put in!
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
4. Plan a Treat
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Is there a restaurant that you really want to visit? Is there something you've been wanting to treat yourself to recently?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It could be a good idea to plan a treat after you have completed your ACCA exam!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This way you'll know that whatever happens, all your hard work will rewarded in the end.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Having a goal in sight can help to keep you motivated when stress starts to kick in.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5. Temper your Expectations
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Of course your objective is to be successful in your ACCA exams and the long term to become qualified. However, these exams aren't a walk in the park and many students have setbacks along the way.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So, temper your expectations. Failing an exam is not a total disaster. It happens to many talented students. You will get there in the end, so don't put yourself under additional pressure if it doesn't work out the first time.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
My advice is to keep things in perspective!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Astranti can help...
that you are not the first person to take your ACCA exams! <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The good news is
that thousands of ACCA students have gone before you, so there is a wealth of
experience that you can benefit from.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Although before my
time(!), this reminds me of a guy by the name of Dick Fosbury who revolutionised
the high jump at the 1968 Olympics. By using a never seen before backward flop
technique he won the gold medal against his rivals. From that day it became the
standard way of jumping and 50 years later is still used by virtually all high
jumpers. They have used the knowledge and technique they have gained from Dick
Fosbury to achieve their own success.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Similarly, you can also
get the benefit of people that have gone before you in your ACCA exams.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We asked students who
have recently completed their June 2016 ACCA exams, what advice they would give to
future students. Their answers are extremely valuable as there is no better
source of information than the people that have actually taken the exams.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We had some interesting
answers - why not learn from their experience to take your revision to a higher
level?! Here are the key points from the survey:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Revise all parts of the syllabus -
anything can be assessed in your exam so don't make the mistake of focusing on
your favourite areas. Our free ACCA online Study
Texts are a great way to revise the entire syllabus and ensure you are fully
prepared for the exams. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Practise under time
constraints<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - try to replicate real exam conditions when you
attempt past papers. It's the best way to test your knowledge and perfect your
time management skills under the pressure of the clock.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Answer all the requirements within the
question<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - read the question carefully at least twice and make
sure you answer all parts. You will miss out on important marks if you don't
answer all elements of the question.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Start revising early<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - don't
wait until the last month to begin your studies. This extra time will allow you
to manage your revision better whilst also keeping a healthy balance with the
rest of your life. Don't be a crammer!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Learn to manage your time effectively
- Examiners often report that they receive rushed answers or
even incomplete scripts. This is a sure way to lose marks. Give yourself time to
answer all questions and resist the temptation to spend too much time on your
preferred topics.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. Plan your answers - Don't dive
straight into answering a question without taking a moment to plan. This will
help you to structure your answer and make sure all your points are being
clearly addressed. Above all, avoid waffle and repetition as this won't get you
marks!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">7. Be prepared for surprises in the ACCA exam
- past papers are a great way to revise but don't just rely on
these. The examiners sometimes throw in a surprise, such as a topic that has not
been assessed for a while.
There isn’t anything worse than leaving an ACCA exam wishing you had just 10 more minutes! Sound familiar? Well don’t worry, you’re not alone. Time Management is an issue that many students face across all exams.

Recently I tutored a Masterclass that involved students doing timed practise questions. Despite a clear reminder for people to manage their time within the questions, students still fell into the trap of spending too long on the first part and doing very poor, and short, second parts of questions. This emphasised to me once again that effective time management is not just about answering all the questions within the total exam time but also dividing your time within the questions.

So I'm not surprised that around a third of students that took part in our June 2016 ACCA Exam Experience Survey said they wished they’d spent more time developing their time management skills prior to their ACCA exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Year on year ACCA Examiners' Reports have also frequently highlighted it as a problem that has resulted in rushed answers and even some incomplete scripts. Take the advice from me, fellow students and examiners to ensure the clock doesn’t beat you!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">W<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">hether it is an ACCA multiple choice or written based exam, perfecting this skill isn’t easy so here are some simple tips that can help you to significantly improve:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ACCA Objective Test/Multiple Choice Questions:<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

1. Read the questions carefully – we recommend that you always read the question twice, the second time pulling out the key requirements
2. Divide your time up – make a plan on how long you are going to spend on each question – hardest thing is to make sure you stick to it!
3. Don’t get bogged down in a question – move on and go back to it later
4. Answer the easy questions first – you know you have them in the bag!
5. Work at a high pace - Most people with time management problems simply work too slowly. If you have an inkling that is you, you need to practise in order to increase your speed

ACCA Written Based Questions:

1. Avoid long explanations of theory – this can cause you to waste time as marks are not rewarded for this unless it is related to the scenario
2. Avoid introductions – again you will not gain extra marks unless you are giving the marker new information
3. Don’t be repetitive – Examiners have mentioned they were surprised at how many students repeated information throughout their answers. Why are they doing this? They simply don’t make a plan, leading to a poor structure
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. Allocate some reading time - Take a few minutes to ensure you understand the requirements of the question and begin to make a plan on how you’re going to approach it
5. Practise writing quickly – There isn’t anything worse than knowing the answer but not having time to get everything down on paper

Implementing the above tips through attempting past ACCA exams is an ideal way to improve your time management skills.

Whilst you do this, why not take advantage of our Marking and Feedback service that will give you detailed feedback and advice as well as an overall score. Our team have marked thousands of exam scripts - we know by having yours marked, your chances of success are greatly increased.

Find out more about getting your ACCA exams markedAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00161657610900895342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5419929697879813761.post-28549139110713172492016-06-20T01:35:00.000-07:002016-08-17T04:23:07.914-07:00Don't make this big mistake!<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">I was recently approached by a worried student who was struggling to remember his theory. He was spending hours reading the ACCA Study Text but simply couldn't remember what he'd just read - nothing was going in! He talked me through his revision technique and basically we soon released that he didn't have a strategy. He simply spent hours reading through the ACCA Study Text over and over again.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">His biggest mistake was that he was not taking notes. I suggested that he should spend one hour on a specific subject annotating the text and capturing the key points as he went along. I am pleased to say that he was quickly able to take me through the ACCA subject in great detail much to his own surprise!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Sometimes it isn't enough to simply read through a piece of text - in my experience you have to take things a step further like this student did. Take notes as you go along. The process of reading a portion of text and then translating this into a written note helps your brain to consume and understand the information. It also helps you to remember it at a later date.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">To help you do this really well, here are 8 simple but effective note-taking tips:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">1. Don't write down every word<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - be selective and aim to capture the key points
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
2. Keep your notes well spaced<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - clutter is difficult to read and learn
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
3. Identify the relationships between topics<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - think about these links as you learn new subjects
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
4. Be an active reader<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - concentrate and stay focused
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
5. Don't be strict on your handwriting, spelling and grammar<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - as long you can understand it later!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
6. Revise as soon as possible after you've taken the notes<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - this will help you remember them
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
7. Colour or highlighting is a useful way of breaking up your notes<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - it will make them memorable
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
8. Don't write too many notes at the beginning and not enough at the end<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"> - consistency is key!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">
Note-taking is vital to success in the exams; it can make the difference between passing and failing. We offer our ACCA Study Text in a printable format as we know many of our students like to make notes on a hardcopy as they go.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I was recently counseling an ACCA student who was struggling with getting this balance right. He was a committed rugby player as well as a father of two small children. Combined with a busy job in the finance team of a large multi-national corporation, his ACCA revision seemed like a step too far in his busy schedule. He found that not only was his revision going badly, he was not managing any of the key parts of his life successfully. He was heading for problems!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This reminded me of many conversations I have had with Accountancy students over the 15 years I've been teaching.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Of course there is no simple answer, but there are some steps that can be followed to help students to get the balance right and be successful in their ACCA exams.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here are my six key tips:
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. Master your Time
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
In order to effectively plan how much time to put into your revision, you need to have some idea of how much time your spending on<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> all <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">aspects of your life.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Spend a week making a note of what you have to do on a day-to-day basis and how much time it is taking you.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This could help you highlight any 'grey time' in which you could replace with revision. For example, if you see that you spent two hours watching television in an evening, maybe you could replace one of those hours with revision.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The key is to make sure your everyday life carries on as normal, because the last thing you want is to start resenting revision. It's just about finding where in your life revision could fit comfortably.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. Focus
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Now you've highlighted where in your life revision could fit, it's vital that in the time you spend revising, you are completely focused.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If in the hour you dedicate to reading a chapter of text, you are also thinking about work tomorrow and what you're going to cook for dinner, you're likely not going to take anything in.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This focus can be achieved by good planning. You should have planned your time so that for that hour or two you spend revising, you don't <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">need<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> to be thinking about anything else.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. Involve Others
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
If you've got a partner, children, or you live with your parents, you need to make sure they appreciate the importance of your ACCA revision.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You should have been able to plan some free time in which you can focus completely on your revision. Therefore it's important no one else provides any distractions.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Involving others and explaining your need to revise may also help with motivation - they might be there to give you that kick if your feeling reluctant to go and complete a mock exam, for example.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. Start Early
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
There may have been a time in your life where you could get away with leaving homework or revision until the last minute.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However you need to recognise that in your busy life, you don't have that luxury anymore.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">That's why it's vital that you start your ACCA revision early and take that pressure off of yourself. This could allow you to relax, knowing that although you can only spend an hour in the evening on your revision, you've got plenty of time until your ACCA exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you do find that you've left things too late, you may need to be prepared to make some sacrifices to ensure you get to catch up on lost time!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5. Enjoyment
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Many students make the mistake of taking their ACCA revision too seriously.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You've probably got enough stresses in your life as it is, so you should try and make your revision enjoyable.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You can achieve this through treating yourself when you've worked hard, or taking your revision into a pleasant, comfortable environment.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The more positively your approach your revision and your exam, the more likely you are to get a positive result!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">6. Seek help
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
You don't have to go through your revision on your own. Whether this means getting your partner involved to quiz you on what you know, or making use of resources such as online forums.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">This is obviously not ideal!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">In my 15 years of teaching accountancy exams, I have found a number of ways to overcome this such as effective note-taking and having a structured revision plan.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">However, there is an even more obvious way to make your ACCA revision more effective with minimal effort. It may seem simple but is often ignored by many students!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Have you considered changing the environment in which you are studying?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Whether due to necessity or out of routine, it's common for students to revise in the same place every day - yet this could be harming their chances of remembering the information.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">An article by the New York Times suggests that if you change where you are studying, you could increase your chances of remembering the information:

<span style="color: blue; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">"The first step towards better learning is to simply change your study environment from time to time. Rather than sitting at your desk or the kitchen table studying for hours, finding some new scenery will create new associations in your brain and make it easier to recall information later."

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Of course not everyone has the time to pack up their things and find a nice field to study in - but that doesn't mean you can't change where you work.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Instead of sitting at that same seat in the library, find a bench outside to sit on. If you normally work at home, why not take your reading to the library?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you come across an important piece of theory whilst reading in a new environment, your brain may make the association to the information if it comes up in an exam.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One of the most important tips when it comes to your revision is variety. This means not just using the same type of resource, but it also means not revising in the same place everyday.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ACCA Printable Study Text
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Although our ACCA resources are online you can still change the environment in which you use them. As mentioned, instead of going through the resources in your kitchen, why not take them into the garden? Or take them to the library?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We also offer printable versions of all our ACCA study text so you don't have to sit in front of the computer to read the text - you can take it out with you!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It goes without saying that all students really want to pass their ACCA exams - so it's important to make sure your revision is as effective as possible. After all, it's a serious matter!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However, there is often a misconception that revision can't also be enjoyable.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">With that in mind, here are three tips that could not only make your revision more fun, they could also make your revision more effective!

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Music
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">We're all used to sitting at school in total silence, and somehow that has led to us thinking that this is the only environment we can work in.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">However, according to a recent study, listening to music <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">during revision can improve your mood - which in <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">turn increases productivity and helps you revise for longer.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Of course you need to find the right balance of music genre and volume, but there is no evidence which suggests that silence is the best work environment.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">So find some nice music and you might find you get more out of those hours you spend reading.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Much like the issue of sitting in silence, we also tend to think that we have to revise in certain locations.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Whether this is feeling like we have to go to the library to revise, or spending everyday sitting in the same seat in your kitchen.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However, finding some new scenery to revise in could not only lead to you having a more pleasant experience, it also could create new associations in your brain and make it easier to remember information later.
Which one are you?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">People regularly use the term “The Model Student” within the education industry when describing successful candidates who pass their exams with top marks. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However, the idea of the model student can seem a bit out of reach for many ACCA students, as they may think achieving that level of performance is unattainable for them.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I wanted to explore the idea of the ACCA model student therefore, in order to try and work out what really makes the perfect student within the accountancy world. This will hopefully inspire some of my ACCA students to reach that little bit further within their own studies to achieve the best result they possibly can.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">To start off with we need to give the model student term a little bit more context. So let's first look at what makes an average student...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">

<b style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<b style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The Average Student

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When talking about averages in education, most see this as the benchmark for their learning. In most cases it's interpreted as doing just the right amount of work to pass, which seems to be good enough for most, and so therefore 'it must be good enough for me'. For this reason, the majority of people, when asked, would probably associate themselves to this group.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But what is average when it comes to the accountancy training sphere? Fortunately, we have some facts and figures of or own to help us outline what it means to be average in our student's field of study.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">From a recent Astranti survey, an average student looked something like this:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Study time per week: 5-10 hours

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Total study time allocated: 2-4 weeks before exam

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mock/practice exams completed: 3+ exams

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Materials used: Study texts, Exam Guides, Practice Exams and Revision Questions

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The average student appears to plan their studies well, using a range of different materials across what appears to be an acceptable amount of time in total.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Average students may also do well by searching for a wide range of sources, perhaps not just settling for the tuition provider with the biggest brand image. They might also make use of some of the additional resources available to them, such as reading blogs, forums and discussion boards across the web.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It is debatable however, whether the characteristics of the average student really makes for the best course of action when it comes to assessing and planning your own studies. In some instances, the average student might be something to look up to, especially if considering the disaster student.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Disaster Student

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It might become apparent in this section that the disaster student is not necessarily something to aspire to!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A disaster student might be highlighted by a few of the following traits when it comes to their studying:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Study time per week: <2 hours (depending on how late their studies are started)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Total study time allocated: <2 weeks before exam

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mock/practice exams completed: ≤1 exam

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Materials used: Study text only

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In addition to these factors, a disaster student is normally the de-motivated type, leaving revision to the last minute, working completely on their own with no external input or guidance and potentially getting distracted very easily.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The likelihood of a disaster student passing their exams first time is slim, though they might never get to the exam as a disaster student would quite possibly be tempted to put off their ACCA exams until a later date. This is of course fine once or twice should other commitments arise, but if it is down to a lack of motivation, then there is no saying how long a disaster student will delay their exams.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It is this factor of motivation that might signify the difference between the three categories of students highlighted, and is a factor that brings us on to the model student.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Model Student

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Below are a few figures you can use to compare our idea of a model student with the others:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Study time per week: 10+ hours

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Total study time allocated: 6+ weeks before exam

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mock/practice exams completed: 3+ exams

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Materials used: Anything available to them (if appropriate for the individual)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">On top of these key characteristics, a model student will seek for additional input on their studying, often visiting discussion boards (as the average student may do), however instead of just reading, a model student is more likely to get involved with discussions, asking questions and sharing their ideas and opinions with other students and tutors where available.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">High motivation from the outset allows model students to fully get their teeth into the study material, enabling them to understand and apply their knowledge when tested.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In terms of distractions, it is hard for anyone to shut themselves away completely when studying, so some procrastination is normal. It is a model student however, when they are able to restrict themselves to other activities (usually involving social media) for only an allocated amount of time between study sessions.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms"; text-align: justify;">Number 1:<b style="font-family: "trebuchet ms"; text-align: justify;"> Brain Food.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Often with revision, students get into the habit of spending so much time on focusing all of their energy into the ACCA study material, that they forget to keep fuelling the body with the nutrients that your brain needs in order to focus to its full potential.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">More often than not, a revision diet therefore consists of energy drinks, sweets, takeaway pizza and that left-over blueberry muffin from the multi-pack that you promised to yourself you would have as a treat for finishing your exams…

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">All of this is of course understandable, as who wants to spend time cooking when they have to pass an exam in two days?! However, there are a few alternative options that are just as quick and easy, that also provide your brain with the right kind of fuel that it requires to help you study more effectively.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Foods high in vitamin C, E and zinc are excellent brain foods, and can include nuts, dried fruits, berries (blueberries are brilliant) and smoothies; most of which can be snacked on whilst revising so are very east options. Alternatively, incorporating broccoli or sage into any meals have also proved to improve cognitive power if you do get chance to cook!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Number 2: Stay Hydrated.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">During revision and the ACCA exam itself, it is also important that you keep you brain hydrated as much as possible. Resisting the temptation to indulge in copious amounts of energy drinks and coffee is a good start when battling through the revision stage, as they can lead to lower levels of concentration, especially if consumed regularly. Instead just stick with a bottle of water. Water is by far the best form of hydration that your brain can get as well as the healthiest!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Drinking water during exams has also been proven to impact positively on cognitive performance. A recent study of exam students at two Universities in London found that students who drank water during their exams scored 5% higher on average than those who had no drink at all.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Number 3: <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Study!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Perhaps the more obvious of these tips involves the fact that you will need to do some degree of studying before your exam (sorry, I don’t make the rules). However, perhaps not so obvious to a lot of people is the amount of time that should be spent studying in each sitting.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">One of the most effective forms of revision involves completing much shorter study periods of 20-30 minutes, with small breaks in between where your eyes can have a break from whatever media of revision being used. This break can be used for making a cup of tea, grabbing a snack or visiting the restroom after drinking all that water! After a few minutes, your brain will be ready for more and you can get your head back down.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">It is also important to ensure that when it comes to these revision sessions, you do not have too much content to cover in a short space of time. Leaving revision too late is a common factor, and the concept of “cramming” is all too familiar with a lot of students…

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Starting revision early and having a revision plan is an invaluable technique to use in the build up to an exam and will enable you to cover all of your revision notes in much greater detail as opposed to rushing and scanning over them with just hours remaining.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Number 4: <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Early Night.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">One of the most vital exam preparation techniques is being able to get a full night’s sleep before heading to the ACCA exam.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Assuming that you have stuck to your revision plan and have covered all areas of your notes meticulously, there shouldn’t be the need for you to carry on studying into the early hours of your exam date. Instead, it is much more important that you have that much needed rest, as this will allow you to think much clearer come the morning of the exam.
